| BEIRUT: The Syrian government Monday announced a rise in fuel prices, with the economy already reeling under the weight of the war raging in the country. The Economy Ministry said that gasoline prices would jump from 140 to 150 Syrian pounds per liter and a ton of fuel oil from 105,000 to 112,000 Syrian pounds, although diesel prices would remain unchanged. Pro-regime sources attributed the decision to international changes in oil prices.
The decisions went into effect Monday, the ministry said, according to the official SANA news agency. They follow a decision in January to eliminate the two-tiered pricing on fuel derivatives, which led to traffic snarls and strikes by public transport workers, who objected to the sudden changes and accused the authorities of allowing the hoarding of gasoline supplies. |
