BEIRUT: Women’s rights campaigners concluded their 16-day-campaign to fight violence against women in a meeting Monday, the state-run National News Agency reported. The goal of the National Alliance for Legalizing the Protection of Women from Family Violence 2012 campaign was to highlight sexist behaviors that lead to practicing violence against women in Lebanon. Supporters wore a white ribbon as a sign of solidarity. The Alliance slammed the lawmakers’ laxity in issuing legislation against domestic violence. “A number of direct and indirect obstacles hampered the process of ratifying the law to protect women against domestic violence, and led to dragging the discussion of the project in Parliament’s sub-committee to almost a year and distorted the contents of the draft law,” a statement by the alliance said. However, the alliance vowed that “what has been achieved until so far has made us realize that reaching our ultimate goal is not impossible,” adding that it “insisted that this law must be issued in a version that meets the needs and aspirations of women in seeking full protection.”
