Date: Nov 19, 2019 Source: The Daily Star Lebanon: Parliament session postponed BEIRUT: The session to elect committee members was postponed indefinitely Tuesday, amid mounting pressure from protesters in Downtown Beirut on the 34th day of Lebanon’s nationwide uprising. The mandate of the committees has been extended, said Adnan Daher, Parliament’s secretary general. The session was postponed, in part due to a lack of quorum as well as pressure from protesters. “The extension of the committee has happened before,” said caretaker Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil after the announcement. Khalil added that postponement of the session is not a reflection of parliament’s constitutionality. The scheduled holding of the parliamentary session angered demonstrators, and critics have raised questions about the constitutional nature of the proceedings, saying that their agenda fails to respond to the demands of protesters. Gun shots fired in Bab Idriss from unknown vehicle BEIRUT: Gun shots were fired into the air in Bab Idriss as protesters clashed with a car attempting to reach Parliament Tuesday. Lebanese media showed a car pushing through crowds of protesters who attacked the vehicle with metal poles and various objects. A passenger in the car then open fire into the air. It is unclear who was in the car. There have been no reported injuries from the incident thus far. A parliamentary session to elect committee members and a legislative session were initially scheduled for last Tuesday, but Speaker Nabih Berri postponed them for a week for security reasons. The sessions are expected to start at 11 a.m. The legislative session includes draft laws related to fighting corruption as well as pensions and a general amnesty. Protesters have widely criticized the proposals.
