Date: Jul 1, 2019 Source: The Daily Star 4 civilians killed in Syria airstrike launched from Lebanese airspace BEIRUT: Fifteen civilians are said to have died and 21 others be injured in an airstrike that hit western Damascus overnight Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Syrian state media have said. Quoting a Syrian military source, SANA reported that Israeli warplanes fired missiles from Lebanese airspace around 12:30 Monday morning that aimed at “some of our military positions” in the outskirts of the Syrian capital and in Homs province. An AFP correspondent in Damascus reported hearing “loud explosions during the night.” A security source told The Daily Star that warplanes were seen and heard flying above Lebanon, including above Zahle and Aley. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the bombing targeted positions linked to Iran and Hezbollah, including a military airport west of the city of Homs. SANA reported that a monthsold baby was among those killed and that a number of other children were wounded. Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syria since the beginning of the civil war there, in 2011, primarily targeting regime forces and their Hezbollah and Iranian allies. The attacks are launched regularly from Lebanese airspace, in violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon.
