NCLW launches legal database on women
BEIRUT: The National Commission for Lebanese Women Thursday launched a database aiming to disseminate knowledge of legislation relating to women’s issues.

The database, accessible on the NCLW’s website, aims to make “legislation, studies and reports relating to women available for all,” according to a statement from the commission.

“The NCLW has long been aware of the importance of informing women in our country of their legal rights,” NCLW President Claudine Aoun Roukoz said during a launch event at the Beirut Bar Association.

“It is clear that the definition of empowerment in any field is connected first and foremost to knowledge and that empowering women to choose their life path requires firstly their knowledge of laws governing their social, political and economic treatment.”

Roukoz added that empowerment also requires protecting women from any violence they may be exposed to, by giving them the tools to activate and apply laws that protect them.

The NCLW aims to make women as familiar with the laws governing their lives as men, Roukoz continued, highlighting “personal status and the rules of marriage, divorce and inheritance” as important legal areas for women.

“They must also be aware of the laws in force in the public service and in business administration and in the fields of work and security, as required.”
