Italian, Lebanese organizations launch prison project to protect vulnerable inmates
BEIRUT: A local organization and an Italian organization Wednesday launched a project focused on protecting women, young adults and people with disabilities in Lebanese jails.

The Association of Justice and Mercy (AJEM) and Italian NGO ARCS Culture Solidali kicked off the “DROIT” project aimed at achieving “rights, social integration, vocational guidance and protection for young adults, women and people with disabilities in Lebanese jails,” a statement from AJEM said.

The project focuses on providing psycho-social, legal support and vocational training for women and young adults in Roumieh and Barbar el-Khazen prisons.

Father Najib Baaklini, president of AJEM, said that the project, which will last three years, aims at protecting “human rights and dignities.”

Baaklini stressed the importance of creating solutions for prisoners and their families and thanked ARCS Culture Solidali for their efforts to enhance the conditions of Lebanese prisons.

The project was launched in coordination with local organization Mouvement Social and co-funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
