Timeline of the assassinations and attempts in Lebanon since ’04

BEIRUT: The following is a list of assassination attempts and bombings carried out in Lebanon since 2004:Oct. 1, 2004: Progressive Socialist Party MP Marwan Hamadeh is wounded when a bomb explodes next to his motorcade, killing his driver. The former telecommunications minister has said that Special Tribunal for Lebanon investigators think the attack may be linked to other assassination attempts.


Feb. 14, 2005: Former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri is killed when a massive car bomb strikes Downtown Beirut as his convoy passes. The blast kills 22 other people, mainly Hariri’s bodyguards and leads to the so-called Cedar Revolution, in which popular protest ends nearly 30 years of Syrian military tutelage in Lebanon.


March. 23: One Pakistani and two Indian janitors are killed and two Sri Lankans and two Lebanese wounded when a bomb deposited in a leather bag explodes at the rear entrance of a shopping center in Kaslik.


March. 26: A car bomb parked near two factories explodes in Beirut’s Saad al-Bouchrieh, wounding six.


April. 1: A bomb rips through Rizk Plaza in Broumanna, wounding 12.


May 7: A car bomb parked between Sawt al-Mahaba radio station and Mar Yuhanna Church explodes in Jounieh, destroying the first and causing extensive damage to the second building. Twenty-two people are wounded.


June 2: Samir Kassir, a columnist for An-Nahar daily and critic of Syria is assassinated when a bomb placed under the seat of his car explodes in Beirut.


June 21: Former head of the Lebanese Communist Party and staunch Syria critic George Hawi is killed as a bomb exploded beneath the passenger seat of his car in Beirut. His driver sustains minor wounds.


July 12: Two people are killed and 12 wounded in an attack on the motorcade of former Defense Minister Elias Murr in a Beirut suburb. The attack appears anomalous compared with other assassination attempts, as Murr was considered a pro-Syrian figure.


July 22: A car parked in front of a restaurant explodes on the popular Monnot Street in Beirut, wounding 12.


Aug. 22: Eight people are wounded when 20 kilograms of TNT explodes next to a hotel in Zalka neighborhood.


Sept. 15: President of Dar al-Haitham for Journalism, Printing and Press Ali Ramez Tohme survives an attempt on his life when a bomb placed in his car explodes. Tohme was not hurt.


Sept. 17: An explosion tears through Ashrafieh, killing one and wounding 23 others.


Sept. 25: Journalist and Syria critic May Chidiac is seriously wounded as a bomb explodes next to her car in Jounieh, north of Beirut. Chidiac, who was a news anchor for LBC, loses her left leg and arm.


Dec. 12: MP and publisher of An-Nahar Gebran Tueni, having recently returned to Lebanon following months in exile in fear of his life, is killed by a remote detonation of a car bomb on the outskirts of Beirut. The blast also kills two security men.


June 21, 2006: Lebanese Cabinet Minister Pierre Gemayel is shot dead in his car. Gemayel, whose brother Bashir was assassinated after being nominated President in September 1982, was an opponent of Syria.


June 13, 2007: Future Movement MP Walid Eido is assassinated as he drives past a car bomb on Beirut’s Corniche. Nine others are also killed in the attack.


Sept. 19: Phalange Party MP Antoine Ghanem is killed by a car bomb in Sin al-Fil, east of Beirut, two days after returning to Lebanon. The attack also kills Ghanem’s bodyguard.


Dec. 12: A 30 kilogram car bomb explodes close to the Defense Ministry in Beirut, killing Army Commander Brigadier General Francois al-Hajj. A military veteran of several conflicts, Hajj was known for his military leadership during the 2007 Nahr al-Bared conflict.


Jan. 25: 2008: Captain Wissam Eid, an Internal Security Forces investigator, is assassinated by a car bomb attack. Eid was one of the most senior Lebanese investigators probing data in the case of Hariri’s killing and had met with U.N. investigators days prior to his death.


Sept. 20: Lebanese Democratic Party member Saleh Aridi is killed in a car bomb attack.
