Latest developments in Arab world's unrest

SYRIA
The Syrian army launches raids on rebellious areas, defying growing international reproach over the regime's deadly crackdown on a 5-month-old uprising. Turkey's foreign minister meets President Bashar Assad to express his concern. Envoys from India, Brazil and South Africa also head to Damascus to press for an end to the violence, which activists say killed 22 people Tuesday and some 1,700 since March.

EGYPT
The Egyptian stock exchange's benchmark index plunges, with investors taking their cues from other international markets spooked by fears of a global recession. The decline brings the index's year-to-date losses to a whopping 37 percent, offering more bad news for a country mired in post-revolutionary economic difficulties.

LIBYA
Rebels forces advance into Brega, 125 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of the opposition stronghold of Benghazi. Rebels have been trying to dislodge Gadhafi forces from the town since April. Two people are killed and 14 wounded in fighting around the strategic oil terminal town. In Tripoli, the Libyan government news agency says NATO airstrikes overnight kill 85 people in Zlitan.

YEMEN
The U.S. and Saudi Arabia pressured Yemen's president to stay in Saudi Arabia after he was released from a lengthy hospital stay to treat wounds suffered in an assassination attempt, according to Yemeni officials. The officials say the U.S. and Saudi warned Ali Abdullah Saleh that his return to Yemen would likely spark a civil war.
