Israel launches attack on Syria from Lebanese airspace
BEIRUT: Israeli warplanes Saturday morning launched missiles into Syria from Lebanese airspace, waking residents of north Lebanon from their sleep, the state-run National News Agency reported.

At around 2:30 a.m., residents of the Akkar town of Wadi Khaled were abruptly woken by the sound of Israeli aircraft launching missiles into Syria, lighting up the night sky, the NNA reported.

Syrian state media SANA reported a Syrian military source as saying the attack was launched on a military target near the city of Masyaf, in the Hama governorate north of Damascus.

The source said the Syrian army intercepted some of the missiles but others hit their target, injuring three soldiers and damaging buildings. British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that 17 members of the regime forces and allied militiamen were injured.

It said the strike targeted a Syrian military college in the town and two buildings used by Iranian forces in nearby villages - a development center for medium-range missiles in Zawi and a training camp in Sheikh Ghadban.

Israel has regularly launched attacks on Syria from Lebanese airspace in the past, in violation of Lebanese territorial sovereignty and U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon. The Jewish state says it is going after Hezbollah and Iranian targets.

Further south at dawn, residents of Sidon heard Israeli warplanes flying low over their homes, in what the NNA described as “mock raids.”
