Saudi Arabia should explain what happened to Khashoggi's body: Turkey

ANKARA: Saudi Arabia bears responsibility to find out what happened to the body of Jamal Khashoggi, Turkey's foreign minister said, reiterating Ankara's stance that it was not King Salman who ordered the killing, Anadolu news agency reported.

Speaking to reporters in Japan, Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey has further information which it will share when Ankara knows for sure that the investigation has been completed.

Cavusoglu also said it was not possible for a 15-man team to come to Turkey to kill a Saudi citizen without orders.

US condemns Khashoggi killing, tells UN investigation is essential

GENEVA: The United States told the U.N. Human Rights Council Monday that it condemned the "premeditated killing" of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and said a thorough and transparent investigation was essential.

Charge d'Affaires Mark Cassayre said the U.S. condemned the killing of the journalist at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last month.

The United States joined several dozen countries to raise the Khashoggi killing during an examination of Saudi Arabia's record under a regular review process.

Council spokesman Rolando Gomez said the review process falls under the council and that the U.S. has announced plans to participate throughout the current round that began Monday.

The U.S. had observer status at the U.N. review of Saudi Arabia's rights record. Washington quit the 47-member council in June, accusing it of bias against Israel.

Report: Saudi investigators worked to remove evidence

ANKARA/ISTANBUL: Saudi Arabia sent a toxicologist and a chemicals expert to Istanbul to cover up the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi before the Turkish police searched the kingdom's consulate, a senior Turkish official said Monday.

"We believe that the two individuals came to Turkey for the sole purpose of covering up evidence of Jamal Khashoggi's murder before the Turkish police were allowed to search the premises," the official said on condition of anonymity.

A newspaper close to Turkey's government also Monday claimed that a team from Saudi Arabia sent to help Turkish authorities investigate Khashoggi's death worked instead to remove evidence of the slaying.

Sabah newspaper, citing "trusted sources," said that an 11-member team of Saudi investigators that arrived in Turkey nine days after Khashoggi was killed included a chemical expert and a toxicology expert.

Also Monday, reports that Khashoggi's was dissolved in acid need to be investigated, Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay said Monday.

He told Turkey's Anadolu news agency it was now accepted that Khashoggi, who disappeared in Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate on Oct. 2, was targeted in a pre-meditated murder. "The question now is who gave the orders. This is what we are seeking answers to now," Oktay said. "Another question is where the body is ... There are reports of [the body] being dissolved with acid now. All of these need to be looked at."

On Saturday, Sabah said Khashoggi's body – which still hasn't been found – was dismembered and removed from the Saudi consulate in five suitcases.

Meanwhile, Khashoggi's sons appealed for his remains to be returned so that he may be buried in Saudi Arabia.

In an interview with CNN Sunday, the sons also said they hoped he did not suffer when he was killed.
