Lebanon: Constitutional Council to study parliamentary appeals
BEIRUT: The period for those defeated in the recent parliamentary elections to appeal the results has ended and the Constitutional Council announced Thursday it would deal with the appeals with “the highest degree of seriousness and responsibility.”

Speaking to reporters early Thursday, the council’s head Judge Issam Sleiman said he is awaiting a report from the Electoral Supervisory Committee before expanding investigations to the “furthest possible boundaries to ensure accuracy of the information and violations.”

Sleiman also noted all MPs would retain their current status and are to carry out their duties until any other decision is taken. “It’s not possible to revoke the role of an MP unless there is a valid reason and this depends on the effect of the irregularities of the contested results,” he said.

Sleiman said he is confident in the Constitutional Council’s ability to make independent rulings.

“The Constitutional Council has proved that it’s independent of other authorities,” he said. “[Even though] the confidence of the Lebanese is weak in all institutions, I think what we have done over the past nine years has restored this confidence in the Constitutional Council.”

Established in July 1994, the 10-member council looks into the constitutionality of challenged laws and rules on challenges submitted against the election of the president or the speaker as well as parliamentary polls.
