Reform campaign urges proportional representation

BEIRUT: The Civil Campaign for Electoral Reform said in a statement Tuesday that only a proportional representation system was capable of preserving diversity in Lebanon, in response to earlier comments by MP Walid Jumblatt, who said that such a system would jeopardize plurality.

“The campaign stresses that proportional representation is the only formula capable of preserving diversity and plurality … in plural societies,” said a statement by the campaign.

“Because only through proportional representation can all minorities guarantee their continuity and presence by relying on their own capabilities, rather than depending on the majority,” the statement added.
