Speaking from an unknown location, he exhorted his supporters to fight on. ___ SYRIA A renowned political cartoonist whose drawings expressed Syrians' frustrated hopes for change is grabbed after leaving his studio and beaten by masked gunmen who break his hands and dump him on a road outside Damascus. One of Syria's most famous artists, Ali Ferzat, 60, earned international recognition and the respect of many Arabs with stinging caricatures that infuriated dictators including Iraq's Saddam Hussein, Libya's Moammar Gadhafi and, particularly in recent months, Syria's autocratic Assad family. ___ YEMEN An airstrike kills eight suspected al-Qaida militants, including a group leader, in the south of the country. The Yemeni government is waging a military campaign to drive out Islamic fighters who overran several southern towns months ago. The militant takeover took place as the government was trying to suppress a nationwide protest movement seeking the ouster of the longtime president. The officials say the airstrike targeted the Ansar al-Sharia group, which is suspected of links to al-Qaida in Yemen. One official identifies one of the slain militants as a leader of the group named Abu Jaber al-Sanaai.
