LUXOR, Egypt – Egypt's security chief has traveled to a southern province to end a campaign of civil disobedience over the appointment of a Coptic Christian governor.
The protest, spearheaded by hardline Islamists in the southern city of Qena, is in its fourth day and has cut railway traffic.

The demonstrators have set up tents along railway tracks, occupied a government building, blocked main roads, all to protest the appointment of a Christian governor to the majority Muslim province.
The governor, a police officer, replaces another Christian governor who was widely reviled and close to the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.
The protesters, from the ultra-conservative Salafi trend, have threatened to appoint their own leader to the city
