Jordanian whose police shooting sparked riots dies

AMMAN, Jordan – Police say an alleged traffic violator whose shooting sparked riots in the Jordanian city of Salt, has died.

Police shot Suleiman Khreisat, 22, in the head last week and critically wounded him when he refused to stop on a road block in the northwestern town of Salt.

Days of violent riots followed the shooting and Salt residents smashed police kiosks, vehicles and street lights. They also destroyed government buildings and torched trees and ATM machines.

Police say the vehicle looked suspicious because it had no license plates and broken front and back windows.

Police spokesman Lt. Col. Mohammed al-Khatib said Thursday Khreisat died in his hospital bed two days earlier. He was buried in Salt, 17 miles (27 kilometers) from the capital Amman.
